Plante ambivalente douce au toucher mais amère en bouche, l'absinthe entre dans la composition de multiples panacées comme de certains poisons. À petites doses, baume physique et de l'âme, elle chasse notamment la bile noire, source de la mélancolie. En forte concentration, elle est abortive. Distillée avec l'anis et le fenouil, à partir de 1797, elle confère une finale âpre à un apéritif suave réputé délier l'imagination comme les cœurs. Cette aura lui attire les foudres des viticulteurs qui l'accusent de mener à la folie et obtiennent son interdiction en 1915. Dès lors, son mythe grandit et la Fée verte devient à jamais la muse, par excellence, des artistes.

Doctor in History of Arts, Benoît Noël is a book writer, teacher and exhibition curator.

He was the contract conservator of the Musée Fournaise de Chatou (Yvelines, France) between 1992 and 1996. He presented in particular the exhibition „L'absinthe: mythe et realité“ in 1993.

Specialist of the kind liqueur, about which he wrote many fine essays.
