Muse, fée puis sorcière, l'absinthe devenue à présent un mythe fait sans cesse référence à ce siècle qui vit Verlaine et Rimbaud rimer au Rat Mort, Degas à la Nouvelle-Athènes et Toulouse-Lautrec boire la verte avec Gauguin et Van Gogh. L'absinthe est si intimement liée à la vie sociale et artistique du XIXe siècle qu'il est impossible de les évoquer sans s'y référer constamment. Tout d'abord boisson élégante, sa réputation commence à vaciller lorsque les artistes s'exprimant en une nouvelle forme d'art, délaissent le rassurant classicisme au profit d'un réalisme jugé de mauvais goût. Ne jettent-ils pas en pleine lumière, à la face des milieux bien-pensants, les vices et les faiblesses de la société ?

Le succès de l'absinthe, boisson non traditionnelle, à l'inverse du vin, indique une évolution dans les mentalités. Et ce changement qui pointe, qui s'empare du milieu ouvrier n'est-il pas dangereux pour les milieux conformistes de la société ? L'absinthe devenue symbole du peuple dans ce qu'il a de plus dérangeant, la misère et par conséquent la contestation, ne pouvait survivre aux secousses du siècle. Devenue bouc émissaire des problèmes du temps, la misère sociale avec l'alcoolisme qu'elle engendrait puis la guerre, l'absinthe ne pouvait que disparaître. Avant de faire parler d'elle à nouveau. Marie-Claude Delahaye is a lecturer in cellular biology at the University Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris. She found her first absinthe spoon in 1981 and was immediately transformed by the “Green Fairy”. Having spent entire days in libraries researching, she became an absinthe historian with the publication of her first book in 1983 -”L'Absinthe – Histoire de la Fée Verte”. Other books followed and have revealed the importante signification of absinthe in the society during the XIXth century, and more particulary the influence it had on art. At the same time, Marie-Claude spent much of her time in antique shops and on markets in view to aquire an impressive collection of souvenirs, etchings, drawings, paintings...

After having organised many exhibitions, Marie-Claude finally created the Musée de l'Absinthe in 1994. The museum is located in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, well-know for it is where Vincent Van Gogh and his brother Theo are burried. Absinthe was the muse of painters and poets during the XIXth century and its true spirit lives again in the Musée de l'Absinthe.
